Nothing is more enjoyable than soothing your aching muscles in a bath tub overflowing with hot water, while listening to relaxing music. Your favorite book is in your hand and the scent of the lavender infused bubbles fill the air. Yes, this sounds like a treat that everyone deserves to have. Bathrooms are not just a place to wash up quickly because you are late for work, or just a place to conduct your morning and nightly routines, it is a place of tranquility. It is a sanctuary in which you can neglect the hardships of the world. That is why the bathroom fixtures you choose are so essential. It must reflect you and your idea of a sanctuary.

One of the most central bathroom fixtures is the lighting. The first thing that probably pops into your mind is the original wall-mounted rectangular mirror that is usually above a vanity, with big bulbs that light up and circles around, producing that vintage Hollywood look. But the 1950s are over my friend and this is the modern world. Now lighting is available in different varieties and styles for the modern bath and for the modern person.

Lighting is not only important for how it suits your refuge, but it also depends on the size of your bathroom. If your bathroom is quite large then several light fixtures may be necessary to avoid dim lighting. Smaller bathrooms do not require as many. Some prefer dim lighting, but they should keep that in mind when they have to shave or would like to read a book. The style of the fixture should be taken into consideration also. Depending on the style of the light fixture, you can make your space either look bigger or smaller. Sometimes that can be a plus, but other times it may not be, especially for smaller bathrooms. By getting a really big lighting fixture, you will make your small space seem even more cramped, which is not so appealing to your guests and even yourself.

Another basic bathroom fixture is the faucet. Just like lights, it too has different styles that range from traditional to contemporary, a bunch that can satisfy your bathroom décor taste buds. It is very crucial along with the toilet and the shower. All these fixtures not only add flare to your bathroom, but can also save water and prevent damages. Think about it, style is usually the number one factor on our list, but if a certain faucet, toilet, or shower fixture does not save water and will most likely wear out easily, then what is the purpose of buying those fixtures.

You need to try finding bathroom fixtures that are a “win-win” scenario, something with both style and strength. You have to balance the two if you care about the outward appearance of your bathroom fixtures, but if not, make sure that they save energy and are tough enough to avoid any meddling plumbing problems. Once you have picked your fixtures to your liking, you can enter into your sanctuary and shut the world out with some headphones and classical music.

Let’s face it, we use water for everything in our daily lives, from washing clothes to taking a shower. But that does not mean we cannot find little ways to save us big money on our water consumption. By making simple modifications to your plumbing system, you are putting yourself in a “win-win” situation. You save money and the environment, setting yourself and the planet up for success. Especially in these hard economical times when every penny counts. We all need to learn how to decrease costs related to plumbing repair.

One system that’s eco-friendly and money-friendly is a Gray Water System. It is a safe and easy system of collecting and filtering water for your faucets, showers, etc., and helps to keep your plumbing repair costs down. The water in this system is reused and re-filtered time and time again, so you can use the water for other purposes such as irrigating your garden to keep your flowers just as happy as you are. This way you do not use water from the local sewage system, keeping your next bill low. With this system you can cut your fresh water consumption in half and it relieves corrosion in your plumbing system which can increase your plumbing costs.

On average, twenty two gallons of bottled water is consumed per American citizen. That is a lot of money and plastic! But instead of paying for all of these water bottles you simply could just install a water filtration system. A system such as this can fill at least three thousand water bottles a year! All of those water bottles fill our landfills and pollute our environment. Soon enough water filters are going to be essential to the saving of our earth. A water filtration system can save you a lot of money and save our planet.

How does water travel? When you turn on the faucet, how does the water get there? The answer is your pipes. Pipes are where it all begins for water traveling all throughout your home. Pipes are also where it begins for water consumption and your money too. Sometimes your pipes get rusty or they have pinhole leaks which can cause flooding of your home or even mold. To repair plumbing damages such as these can cost you thousands of dollars. But there is a simple and easy way to prevent such things from happening. If you use things such as pipe lining, you will not find the need to re-pipe or cut open your walls, saving you from a homeowner’s nightmare.

So as you can see there are many ways to save money when it comes to water consumption and plumbing. Whether it is a filter system or installing copper pipes, there are many ways to save money and our planet. Doing all of this while keeping the modern conveniences that we are all use to can be possible without the need of spending all your money and keeping it for yourself in these hard economical times. When it comes to anything in regards to plumbing costs or even daily troubles, just remember three simple words: just be smart. That way you can live a greener yet happy lifestyle, all day every day.

One of the key elements of your house is the bathroom. Although it may not be as big as the master bedroom or the kitchen, it is just as important, in fact, more. The bathroom is made up of a complex system that can often cause trouble. Yes you guessed it, the plumbing. Although it may not have a nice ring to it, it must not be avoided, so do not be intimidated by those pipes that hide in the walls. It is very vital to hire a professional plumber to check your plumbing system once each year, but it does not hurt to check it yourself time and again. Here are some tips that can help you check the plumbing within your household.

The first tip when checking the plumbing in your home is to clean out the drains. This is necessary to make sure that the residue built over time is cleared. That way you do not have to solve the issue when the water will not nudge. Even though it is not exactly the most pleasant thing to do, this will save you from really digging something foreign out from your drain when the time comes. To complete this task you can buy a plastic drain tool from your local home improvement store, or if you want to take a green approach, you can use white vinegar to clean your drains.

The second tip relates to one of the most annoying sounds in the plumbing, the running of a toilet. Its loud swish swash is enough to go mad. But do not panic, where there is a will, there’s a way. If your toilet is running continuously, that means that the flapper is not set in place or is completely worn out. No sweat, first scrub off any residue that may have built up against the flapper and than just remove the cover of the tank and replace the current flapper with a brand new one.

Related to the obnoxious noise of a running toilet is the incessant drip drop of a faucet. And no, chocking the faucet with a cloth will not help, but this instruction will. The first thing you need to do is to place your hand under the faucet and feel whether the drops are cold or warm. This way you can determine which side is leaking, the hot or the cold side. Once you have figured that out, you can turn off the cold and hot water supply lines. This is located under the sink. When you are done with that, remove the knob from the side that is leaking and take off the valve stem. Next, check the washer which is positioned at the bottom of the stem and replace it if it is in horrid condition. Restore all the elements and lastly check the water for any leaks just in case.

Hopefully, these tips will help you deal with those little unbearable plumbing problems. There are definitely more ways that you can DIY, a.k.a. “do it yourself,” your bathroom. Remember, by routinely checking your plumbing system, you are saving yourself from more work and more expenses.

While kitchens are considered to be the heart of the home, the bathroom is as equally as important. Not only is the bathroom one of the most important rooms in the home, it has also become a personal oasis, a place where the stresses of everyday life disappear, if only for a little while. That is one of the reasons why it is so important to know how to do some basic plumbing yourself, not only for maintaining but also to enhance the overall look.

There is nothing more irritable than the sound of a dripping faucet. This irritating noise does not induce relaxation of any type or any form. This, thankfully, is an easy plumbing fix. In order to find out if the faucet is leaking hot or cold water, simply feel the drips. Then turn off the water supply. This is done by shutting of the turn-off valve which is usually located under the sink. The next step is to remove the knob where the leak is from, the hot or cold water, and unscrew the valve. Check and replace the components, including any washers that may look worn-out and put the knob back on. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. It’s as simple as that!

Is the toilet making noise? Water bills can sky-rocket if there are running toilets. Usually when this happens it is time to either replace the flapper or the flapper is not seated properly. This is also an easy fix. Start off by removing the tank cover and scrubbing around the area that the flapper rests on with a nylon sponge. Now check to see if the toilet has stopped running. This will eliminate any sediment that may impede the flapper from setting correctly. If removing the sediment did not work, then it is time to replace the flapper. These are sold at home improvement stores and are very simple to install. Just follow the installation instructions included with the flapper. You’ve fixed the plumbing yourself!

Clogging is also a very popular issue with plumbing and easy to fix yourself. This is extremely disgusting and takes away from the overall aesthetic picture of the perfect oasis. Drains get clogged very easily and can damage pipes in the home. The best way to handle this is by not avoiding the issue and resolving as quickly as possible. The drains can be cleaned out with a plastic drain cleaning tool or with unclogging solutions available at home improvement stores. A simple home remedy is using white vinegar and Alka Seltzer tablets.

These are just a few basic plumbing tips to help maintain and enhance one of the most important rooms in the home, the bathroom. This room is one of the big contentions in home value and the most used room in a house. It is very important to make sure that all the components of this personal sanctuary are in correct working order. No drips, no clogs and no running toilets; a wonderful and pleasant environment to relax in, even just for a minutes of every day.

One of the often asked questions about plumbing is when to replace it. The answer to that question all depends on your plumber. You are probably thinking, “of course it does, why wouldn’t it?” But the only way you will know is by going through the trouble.

There is absolutely no set time in which you should replace your plumbing system. The only way to know when a replacement is needed is by having yearly checkups with a professional plumber. Think of it as a science experiment. By the observations and data made by the plumber, you will know how long your plumbing should withstand. Without the guidance of a plumber, you will have no clue as to a set time to restore your system.

Your home is also a key element. The older your home is, the more likely you will have to change the plumbing system. The pipes in the walls over years can deteriorate significantly, along with other plumbing fixtures. The state of the plumbing system is just another factor to this question. If the state of your plumbing is in great condition, of course you would not replace it. But if it is in poor condition, you have answered your own question. In that case it would be a great time to repair or replace your monster of a plumbing system.

The type of plumbing that is used in your household can also be viewed by reviewing that home inspection report that you received when you bought your lovely home. If you lost it, at least you can find a plumber. You have to keep an eye out for signs of danger if your house is more than 60 years old. Do not let those exposed pipes fool you. Irregularities in an older home are common. If the tube has stains, discoloration, dimples or flaking, then these are danger signs for corrosion.

Another thing to keep your eye on are those sneaky leaks that leave presents known as puddles, or in severe cases, rivers. Whether it is severe or a small issue, leaks usually indicate that a “whole-house” plumbing replacement is necessary, and yes even if it seems like a quick fix. Why is that? Well usually and unfortunately, the original pipes in your house are made up of the same material, meaning they have been programmed to the same water supply and patterns of usage. Another tip is to check the water that comes out of your bath tub before you take your bubble bath. If the color of the water is brown or yellow, then that means your pipes are rusting, which is a signal of decay. Yea, you are definitely going to need to postpone that bath for another time.

All these cases need to be taken into consideration. Replacing a “whole-house” plumbing system can be very costly, especially when it comes to the age of your humble abode. So take the time to do your yearly checkups with the plumber and even take the time to check it out for yourself. If your plumbing is not doing its job, then replace it, because a safer home is a happier home.

Making snow angels, ice skating on a pond, snowball fights, sitting snug next to a fire while snacking on scrumptious smores, yes you guessed it, the magic and bliss of winter time. Nothing can compare to it. Nothing can poke a hole in this bubble of a peaceful and harmonic spell, except your pipes. There is nothing more exciting than frozen pipes, especially when they burst from the warmth of the next day.

We all know that dealing with plumbing during the winter season is not exactly fun or fast. It is an problem that we keep running into time and again. This continuous battle between you and your plumbing during wintry weather has to stop immediately and if it doesn’t, I hate to break it to you, but the pipes are definitely going to win, unless you do something about it. So put down your delicious hot cocoa and face it, your plumbing is going nowhere. So take a stance and fix this problem before it gets out of control. It’s time to winter proof your plumbing!

There are many ways you can keep your pipes from becoming frost bitten during the cold season. The ones that are of utmost concern are any that may have a lot of exposure to the cold, such as sprinklers, pools, outdoor hoses, unheated rooms, etc. Your house should be heated at all times, which does not seem to be a concern during the winter. It is advised to leave a few doors or windows open to let the air flow throughout the house.

Insulating your pipes is another great way to winterize your home plumbing. This can be done by using a unique insulating type tape or foam padding. If you want to save money, then the rags you leave in your kitchen sink or the newspapers you read every morning can be of use. Both could also act as an insulator for your pipes, just do not use it if the pipe you choose to place it in is at risk of getting wet.

Any plumbing fixtures or pipes that are out in the open must be exposed to some source of heating. Whether it be a lamp from your living room or a space heater, both will do the job. Remember, whatever source you choose must be kept at a safe distance from either the fixtures or the pipes. If not than you will end up having two issues to solve. It is advised to run your faucets routinely every day. It can get tremendously chilly, that is why running the water from every valve in your house should be done continuously throughout the day to assure that the water will not freeze over.

These are some easy tips that can help you winterize your home and relieve you from any plumbing disasters. Just always remember to not leave it until the last minute, that way you can get it over with, and go back to enjoying that bubble of a peaceful and harmonic spell called winter.

What do you do when you are faced with a plumbing emergency? Panic is usually the first thing that sets in and we somehow lose the ability to think straight. However, that is exactly the one thing and reaction that you must avoid at all costs. Acting quickly can save you from costly repairs and extensive damage to your home and personal property.

Running toilets, burst pipes, leaks in the plumbing system, and all other water-related plumbing emergencies can be disastrous, frustrating, and costly. Not only do they waste gallons of water and raise your water bill, but the damage to your home can be extensive and dangerous. Water damage not only ruins ceilings, floors, and furniture and fixtures but they can also spur the growth of mold in your home. Mold is extremely hazardous to your health and can even be fatal. Not to mention the fact of the cost involved in order to rid your home of mold and the temporary displacement of you and your loved ones when you have to leave your home due to the health risks involved. So if you are ever faced with this type of plumbing emergency, follow these simple but very important and effective steps.

It is imperative that all water flow in your house is stopped. Make sure you turn off all water flow to your home. It is quite difficult and close to impossible to get burst pipes and leaks fixed immediately but you can stop any further damage by closing off the source of water. Not only will you stop wasting gallons of water, but you can save your home from costly and extensive water damage and prevent the growth of mold.

It is extremely important that you find the main water shutoff valve as quickly as possible. Every home has a main valve that can be turned off and completely stave the flow of water throughout your entire home. This valve is usually located outside of your home and near the water meter box.

Then turn off each individual shut-off valve inside your home. Each plumbing fixture has a shut-off valve. Each and every bathroom, kitchen and laundry room have these valves located where the plumbing fixtures are installed. Check under all the sinks which are usually where they are located. The shutoff valves for toilets are located on the pipe in the back of the plumbing fixture. Although, you have switched off the main valve, this will stop any water left in the plumbing system from leaking any further.

Although these steps do not resolve the problem or issue you may have, they will deter any further damage to your home. This will give you the time you need to call a qualified professional plumber to evaluate and fix your plumbing system. Just remember the golden rule, do not panic. When plumbing emergencies occur stay calm, assess the situation, and immediately follow steps to temporarily resolve the problem. However, seek professional help as soon as possible in order to avoid additional damage to your home.

If you know what to look for and ask the right questions, the entire process can become a seamless chore.

Before hiring a plumber, make sure the individual or company is properly licensed. There is always a serious risk of hiring unqualified and improperly trained plumbers. Damages due to improper installation or a wrong diagnosis can create a financial nightmare and undue hardships. There are numerous avenues on the internet to check if the plumber and the plumbing company have all the proper licenses required. Remember it is better to be safe than sorry.

Also, it is always a good idea to ask for references and recommendations. This is an excellent gage for determining the quality of the plumber’s or plumbing company’s services, professionalism, execution of services on a timely basis and customer service. If the individual works for a plumbing company, check with the Better Business Bureau and third-party websites for any comments about the company. Technology today makes obtaining this information almost effortless. The more you know the better.

It is also a good idea to obtain a background check on anyone working in your home. Keep in mind that this individual will be working in your home, will have access to all your belongings and interacting with you and members of your family. Even if the plumber works for a plumbing company, you would be surprised to find out how many plumbing companies do not employ this practice.

Let’s not forget the money aspect! We all know how important this is. There is nothing worse than dealing with unpredictable costs. We all have budgets. Be forthwith and address any concerns you have on pricing. Honesty is always the best policy. This is crucial for both parties. That is why you have to make sure you get a detailed estimate and executed contract. The contract should list, by line item, the cost for all materials, installation, labor and permits (if applicable) and an estimated time of completion. The contract needs to be signed by both parties and make sure there is some type of warranty or guarantee. This can avoid a lot of hassles in the future and there will be no surprises when you get the final bill.

Following these important suggestions will greatly help you in finding a qualified professional plumber or plumbing company. Remember there is no such thing as asking too many questions or expecting too much. It is essential to be proactive when you are looking for a reliable professional to work on your plumbing and in your home. So do your homework, become well informed, dot all your i’s and cross all your t’s and you will be well on your way to a successful working relationship with your plumber and a job well-done.

Nothing challenges a person like a puzzle they cannot solve. That is why so many people take the opportunity to solve any dilemma themselves, because they want to be the ones to put the puzzle together.

One of the most difficult and time consuming puzzles to decipher is actually your plumbing. Surprised? Plumbing can in fact be a difficult and intricate system. Its damages can range from being a simple repair to a cry for help. People often ask the question, “When should I do the plumbing myself?” The answer to that question depends on what needs to be repaired and how bad the damage is. It also depends on you. Do you think yourself capable of actually fixing the problems? If you do not than you are better off calling a professional plumber to assess the situation.

Do not insist on a DIY project, a.k.a. “do it yourself” when you truly do not know the state of repair that your plumbing may need. Often times the people who pick that path at a fork road usually end up in the beginning. How many times has your father or husband strapped on a tool belt and claim they can fix the damage? And how many times have they asked you to call the plumber because Noah’s Ark appeared in your flooded basement a week later due to a cracked pipe? You should save yourself the trouble and call an expert that way you will not end up at square one.

Many people believe that if you complete the task yourself you will save money. There are two sides to that belief. If you are an experienced do-it-yourself plumber or simply just an average Joe who happens to know a lot about plumbing, than go for it. If you are fully capable of patching up the problem, then by all means fasten your tool belt and go “Home Depot” on your bathroom. Now, if you do not know what to do and figure that by reading a manual or using an internet website as a guide as a way of getting the job done, you should rethink that. The latter approach at times can be very costly.

Just think about it. You are not aware of the damages that have taken place in your plumbing system, so you reason that you can resolve the issue yourself regardless of lack of prior knowledge about plumbing. You go out, buy the supplies that the internet based website lists and you try it out. Your attempt made no significant solution and now your pipes are orchestrating shrieking sounds in your walls. That is about the time you pick up the phone and decide that maybe contacting a professional plumber is best. So not only did you not repair the problem, but you actually made it worse. And to top it off, you wasted money on supplies and now have to pay extra for the plumber.

Remember, plumbing is a difficult puzzle to solve; each piece has to fit in perfectly. So unless you know your stuff, call an experienced plumber to get the job done.

We all plant our lives in and around a foundation in which we call our “Home.” Just about every day we are at home completing our daily routines and enjoying the comfort of its structure. But often times we forget what makes the structure such an inviting sanctuary to us, such as the plumbing. Plumbing checkups are usually put aside, written somewhere on a post-it that you probably left on your desk with numerous of your other “will get to later” reminders. It is a habit that everyone undergoes. But just when you realize that you completely forgot to call and arrange a plumbing check up, your bathroom has become Lake Michigan due to a failure.

Such an occurrence happens all the time. Others may be leaking or have clogged pipes, a ruptured septic line, or even running toilets. The possibilities are endless. Some of the most ghastly effects to such possibilities can be flooding, low water pressure, and the smelly outcome of a busted septic line. Whether it is just replacing an old worn out shower, caulking fixtures, replacing a flapper valve system, swapping rusted screws for new ones, or cleaning the buildup of residue in pipes, plumbing checkups are essential. Leaving it to the last minute will only worsen any damages that you may have or that may develop and who honestly wants that to happen? It is imperative that the plumbing system is always maintained in good working order.

It is suggested by expert plumbers that your plumbing system be checked every year, preferably in the spring time, especially for those who have cold winters when the plumbing system is most prone to damage. This way you can be assured that any damages are fixed and not make the mistake of arranging a check up before winter. Many times people will try to pull off a DIY, a.k.a. “do it yourself,” which is fine, only when you are fully aware of how to handle and fix the situation. Otherwise it is best if you leave the job to an experienced and skilled worker.

Along with putting aside those important plumbing checkups, you also attach to it a cost. Whenever we think of necessary repairs or household investigations, we cannot help but see dollar signs. If only we could trap the problem in a closed box and throw it away! It is utterly normal to cringe at an expensive plumbing cost, but just like your “will get to later” reminders, this problem can be avoided too. If you fulfill your duty of yearly checkups than you will not have to suffer paying a pricey fee due to a disastrous plumbing malfunction. This will help you stay clear of immense problems and its costly charge.

Preventive care of your plumbing system will not only rid you of future tribulations, but also your stress. What better way to save yourself from frantically worrying about the pipes busting in the basement.

Keeping up to date with your annual imperative plumbing checkups will help maintain a happy home.
